Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD)
Research Activities
Liquid metal flows under the influence of magnetic fields
• Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) for liquid metal blankets in nuclear fusion applications
• MHD flows in typical hydraulic components
• Heat and mass transfer in MHD flows
• Liquid metal measuring techniques
Methods
• Experimental investigations of MHD flows in the MEKKA laboratory with the fluids NaK, PbLi and GaInSn
• Theoretical analyses by asymptotic methods for applications in strong magnetic fields
• Numerical simulation of MHD flows in complex, electrically coupled geometries
The MHD research at KIT exploits the synergies between theoretical analysis, computational modeling, and experimental activities offered by the two liquid metal facilities MEKKA and MaPLE.
